Nigerian English uses British spelling: colour, programme, cheque and organise. Some words carry Nigerian meanings that outsiders miss. To flash someone is to give them a missed call, a go-slow is a traffic jam, and "well done" greets a person at work. Use them when your audience is Nigerian and they will sound right at home.

Names come from Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa and hundreds of other languages, and a voice can stress them wrongly. Preview Adebayo, Ngozi, Chukwuemeka or Abubakar, and towns such as Ogbomosho, Onitsha or Maiduguri. Most English scripts leave out Yoruba tone marks. If a name sounds off, set its reading once in the pronunciation dictionary.

Money is in naira and kobo, so write amounts in words, such as "five thousand naira". Nigerian Pidgin lines like "How far?" are everywhere in ads and on radio, and a touch of Pidgin can make a spot feel local. Its spelling is not fixed, so preview each line. For a lively market ad, try the Emotional voice with the Happy preset.
