German spelling tells the voice how long a vowel is. Maße (measurements) has a long a and Masse (mass) a short one, and the only clue is ß versus ss. Umlauts matter just as much: schon means already, while schön means beautiful. Write ä, ö and ü in full, and fix any text that arrives as ae or oe from an old system.

Long compound nouns are normal German, and words such as Kundenservice or Datenschutzerklärung usually read well. A brand-new compound is clearer with hyphens, as in E-Mail-Adresse. Abbreviations are riskier. A voice may spell out z. B., bzw., ggf. or usw. letter by letter, so write zum Beispiel, beziehungsweise, gegebenenfalls and und so weiter in a script.

German uses a comma for decimals (2,5) and a point for thousands (10.000). An ordinal takes a point too, so am 3. Oktober is read as am dritten Oktober. Preview such dates, because the point can sound like the end of a sentence. English words such as Meeting, Feedback or a product name deserve a listen, and the pronunciation dictionary can set how one is read.

What people make with German voice over

Explainer videos for manufacturers

Narrate product demos and machine instructions for engineering firms, and update one step when a model changes instead of booking a new recording session.

Mandatory staff training

Voice the yearly safety briefing, a data protection course or an onboarding module, with one narrator across every chapter and Sie used throughout.

Advent and Christmas market season

Write in-store and social messages for Advent offers or a Weihnachtsmarkt stall, then swap in next year's dates rather than starting again.

Listen versions of articles

Give readers of a news site or company blog a spoken version of each long article, made from the text you already publish.

Germany. The voices on this page speak standard German as heard in Germany, the form most courses teach and most national adverts use. Austrian German has its own vowels and everyday words, and Swiss Standard German writes ss where Germany writes ß. For those audiences, open the Austrian or Swiss page in the list above.

Use Sie for banks, insurance, health, public bodies and most business training. Many consumer brands, apps and sports companies now say du, especially to younger listeners. Pick one before you write and keep it through the whole script, including words such as Ihr or dein, so the narrator never changes tone halfway through.
