“In the biggest languages, the voices sound nearly human.”

Canadian spelling sits between American and British. Canadians write colour, honour, centre, cheque and travelled, yet most use organize with a z. The last letter of the alphabet is zed, as in Britain. Dates turn up in several formats, so write them out in words. A voice reads color and colour the same way, so spelling matters most for captions and on-screen text.
Local words make a script sound Canadian: washroom for restroom, toque for a knitted winter hat, loonie and toonie for the one- and two-dollar coins, and a two-four for a case of beer. A double-double is a coffee with two creams and two sugars. Use metric units, such as kilometres and degrees Celsius, because that is what Canadian road signs and forecasts show.
Place names from French and Indigenous languages need a listen first. Preview Saskatoon, Mississauga, Gatineau and Trois-Rivières, and northern names like Nunavut or Iqaluit. If a voice stresses one wrongly, set its reading once in the pronunciation dictionary. For French-speaking Quebec, a script written in French is the better fit.

The gaps are small, but Canadians notice them. Many Canadians raise the vowel in words like about and house, which can sound like "a-boat" to American ears. Some say process and sorry with a longer o. Vocabulary differs too, from washroom to toque.
Choose it for messages meant only for Canadians: a provincial government notice, a bank or telecom ad, or training for staff in Toronto or Calgary. Canadians accept American voices, but a home-grown accent shows the message was made in Canada.
