The Albanian alphabet has 36 letters. Two carry marks, ë and ç, and nine are written as pairs but count as single letters: dh, gj, ll, nj, rr, sh, th, xh and zh. Each pair is its own sound, so ll differs from l and rr from r. Restore marks that chat habits strip, writing është rather than eshte and çaj rather than caj.
Standard Albanian, agreed at the 1972 orthography congress, is built mainly on the southern Tosk dialect. Northern Gheg, spoken in much of northern Albania and in Kosovo, sounds different and keeps forms such as the infinitive me punue. Schools and broadcasters in both countries use the standard, so write in it.
Write dates day first, with month names in lower case: 28 nëntor 2026. Decimals take a comma, as in 2,5. Use ju for adverts and official notices and ti for friendly social clips. Brand names and Italian or English words can need a hint, so preview them and set any fix in the pronunciation dictionary.

Yes, for most scripts. Kosovo uses the same standard Albanian as Albania in schools, newspapers and television. Listeners will hear an accent from Albania rather than a Gheg one. For a local feel, add a familiar greeting, preview it, and keep the rest in the standard.
Because ë is a separate vowel, not a decorated e. It is one of the most common letters in Albanian, and dropping it changes the sound of the word and sometimes the word itself. Type it with an Albanian keyboard layout, or search and replace before you paste.
