Urdu runs right to left in the Perso-Arabic script. Books, newspapers and signboards in Pakistan favour the hanging Nastaliq style, but Nastaliq is a way of drawing the letters, not a different spelling. The same text shown in a Naskh font holds the same characters, so the font you see does not change what the voice reads. Arabic keyboards insert ي and ك, which look close to Urdu ی and ک but are different characters.
Short vowel marks such as zabar, zer and pesh are usually left out. Add them only where a word could be read two ways, then preview it. Write aspirated sounds with do chashmi he (ھ), as in کھانا and پھول, and keep gol he (ہ) for an ordinary h. End sentences with the Urdu full stop (۔) and use the Urdu question mark (؟).
Pakistani scripts use both Urdu digits and Western digits, so a date may appear as ۱۴ اگست or 14 اگست. Urdu digits are their own set: ۴, ۵ and ۶ differ from the Arabic ٤, ٥ and ٦. Choose one style for the whole script. Use آپ for ads, lessons and phone menus, and keep تم for friends. Words such as موبائل and آفر are normal in ads, and any that are misread can go in the pronunciation dictionary.

Roman Urdu, such as "aap kaise hain", is common in texts and social posts, but the voice may read it as English. Spoken Urdu and Hindi share most everyday grammar and many words, but the scripts differ and formal vocabulary splits. Urdu draws on Persian and Arabic words such as شکریہ and اجازت, where formal Hindi often uses Sanskrit ones. Write Urdu in Urdu script and choose an Urdu voice. For text in Devanagari, use the Hindi page.
