Swiss French is spoken in the west of Switzerland, from Geneva and Lausanne to Neuchâtel, Fribourg and the French-speaking Valais. It keeps the grammar and spelling of France. Choose it for a cantonal campaign, a tourism office or a Swiss company addressing staff in Romandie.

Numbers follow their own pattern. Septante and nonante are used across Romandie, and Vaud, Valais and Fribourg also say huitante for 80, while Geneva and Neuchâtel keep quatre-vingts. Local terms include natel for a mobile phone, panosse for a floor cloth and cornet for a carrier bag, and in Vaud the mayor is the syndic.

Switzerland has four national languages, so place names often have a German form too. In a French script, write Bâle, Berne, Bienne and Soleure, not Basel, Bern, Biel and Solothurn. German loans also turn up in speech, such as poutzer for cleaning. If a name like Gstaad or Saas-Fee is read awkwardly, set its reading once in the pronunciation dictionary.

Yes, on a paid plan: paid plans include commercial rights, and the Free plan is for personal and evaluation use only. Starter costs $5 for the first month, then $19 a month.

Preview the line first. If a number, date or abbreviation comes out wrong, write it the way it should be spoken, or add it to the pronunciation dictionary, which is on every plan. One entry fixes that word across the whole project.

Not much. A listener from Lyon follows it without effort, and written Swiss French looks almost identical. The differences are the accent, a pace often called slower, the numbers huitante and nonante, and words such as natel. Pick it when your audience lives in Romandie.

Dates go day first, as in le 1er août, the Swiss national day. Times are usually written with h, such as 18 h 30, and said as dix-huit heures trente. Swiss prices often use a point before the centimes. Preview any line with figures.
