Belgian French is the French of Brussels and Wallonia, and it differs from Paris in rhythm and in some vowels. Choose it when a message is meant for Belgian listeners: a commune notice, a regional shop, a school or a Brussels employer. A France accent works, but locals notice it at once.

Numbers are the quickest local signal. Belgians say septante for 70 and nonante for 90, yet keep quatre-vingts for 80, unlike parts of Switzerland. Everyday words differ too: a GSM is a mobile phone, a kot is a student room, and il drache means it is pouring. As in Quebec, dîner is lunch and souper is the evening meal.

Belgium has three official languages and Brussels is officially bilingual, so many towns have two names. Write the French form in a French script: Anvers, Malines, Louvain and Gand rather than Antwerpen, Mechelen, Leuven and Gent. Flemish names with no French form, such as Zaventem or Knokke, may get a French reading; preview them and set the reading in the pronunciation dictionary.

Preview the line first. If a number, date or abbreviation comes out wrong, write it the way it should be spoken, or add it to the pronunciation dictionary, which is on every plan. One entry fixes that word across the whole project.

Yes. Belgian French uses the same grammar and spelling as French in France, and the accent is mild. What stands out is vocabulary such as septante or GSM. If one script must work in both countries, write soixante-dix and avoid local words.

Most people in Brussels use French day to day, but the region is officially bilingual, and public bodies address residents in both languages. For a shop, a clinic or a city service, make a French version here and a Dutch version on the Belgian Dutch page.
