Galician follows the official norm of the Real Academia Galega. It uses ñ and ll like Spanish, but the letter x stands for the sh sound, as in xente, Xunta and xuño, and native words have no j. Only acute accents are used. Some mark meaning, so é (is) differs from e (and).

The biggest risk in a Galician script is Spanish creeping in. Words such as hasta, entonces or gracias slip into texts written in a hurry, where Galician says ata, entón and grazas. Galician also places object pronouns after the verb in plain statements: dígoche, not te digo. Ask a fluent speaker to read the script once before you record.

Use the official Galician forms of place names, such as A Coruña, Ourense and Sanxenxo, rather than La Coruña or Orense. Contractions such as do, na, coa and polo are standard spelling, so keep them. Write decimals with a comma and dates as 17 de maio. For brand names or Spanish surnames that come out oddly, add them to the pronunciation dictionary.

Yes, on a paid plan: paid plans include commercial rights, and the Free plan is for personal and evaluation use only. Starter costs $5 for the first month, then $19 a month.

Preview the line first. If a number, date or abbreviation comes out wrong, write it the way it should be spoken, or add it to the pronunciation dictionary, which is on every plan. One entry fixes that word across the whole project.

Galician and Portuguese share a medieval ancestor, and speakers of each follow much of the other. Spelling is where they part: Galician writes ñ and ll where Portuguese writes nh and lh, and x for sounds Portuguese often spells with g or j. Use the Portuguese page for Portuguese scripts.

Write A Coruña. Galician law has made the Galician forms of place names official since 1983, and they are what local listeners expect. The same goes for Ourense, Sanxenxo and Fisterra. Older Spanish forms belong in Spanish writing, not in galego.
