Maltese grew from Arabic but is written in a Latin alphabet of 30 letters. The extras matter: ħ is a breathy h sound while plain h is usually silent, għ is mostly silent and lengthens the vowel next to it, x sounds like sh and q is a glottal stop. Leave out the dot on ż or ċ and the word changes sound.

The article il- changes to match many consonants, the so-called sun letters, and the change is written: ix-xemx, it-tifla, id-dar. Keep the hyphen and the doubled letter as they appear. Short forms with an apostrophe, such as ta', f' and b', belong in the text too, since that is how the words are written.

Most people in Malta mix English into Maltese, especially for technology, business and brand names. Decide whether each borrowed word keeps its English spelling or takes a Maltese one, and stay consistent. Preview mixed lines carefully. If an English term is read with the wrong sounds, set its reading once in the pronunciation dictionary.

Maltese is a Semitic language that developed from the Arabic once spoken in Sicily and Malta, so its core grammar and many basic words are related to Arabic. It is written in Latin letters, though, and borrows heavily from Italian, Sicilian and English. Arabic listeners recognise some words but not whole sentences, so use the Arabic page for Arabic.

Yes, and most Maltese listeners expect some. Single words and brand names usually sit well inside a Maltese sentence, so preview them in place. For whole sentences in English, a separate English voice usually sounds more natural than a Maltese voice reading English. The British English page is in the list above if you need one.
