Malaysian Tamil is the Tamil of families in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Perak, Penang and Johor, many descended from rubber estate workers who came from Tamil Nadu. Children can study in Tamil primary schools, so written Tamil here stays formal and close to the Indian standard. Choose these voices for festival offers, temple notices and Tamil school content.
Daily speech takes words from Malay and English. People talk of the pasar malam (night market), the kampung, teh tarik and roti canai, and switch to English for work words. Decide whether to write these in Tamil or Latin letters, keep to one choice for the whole script, and preview every line where the two scripts meet.
Malay place and street names appear in most local scripts: ஜாலான் for jalan (road), பெட்டாலிங் ஜெயா, ஈப்போ and கிள்ளான். Write them as your audience reads them and listen to each one. Festival names follow Malaysian use, so write Deepavali, not Diwali, and remember that Thaipusam is a public holiday in several states. A name that keeps coming out wrong can go in the pronunciation dictionary.

Written Malaysian Tamil follows the Tamil Nadu standard, so formal scripts look almost identical. Speech differs in accent and in loanwords from Malay and English, and Malaysian listeners notice an Indian-sounding voice. Keep local words such as kampung where your audience would use them.
Often, if it is written in formal Tamil and avoids local slang. Place names, school terms and official words differ, though, so check those for each country. Then preview the script with a Malaysian voice and a Singaporean one, and keep whichever sounds right.
