Estonian spelling follows speech closely, with one big gap: sound length. The language has three lengths, and writing shows only two. Kooli can mean of the school or into the school, and the second is held longer. The voice picks the length from context, so preview lines where the case matters and rephrase any that read wrongly.

There are fourteen cases and no grammatical gender. Tema means both he and she, so a script with two characters needs names, not just pronouns, for listeners to follow. Abbreviations and figures take endings with a hyphen, as in EL-i or 5-le, which a voice can trip over, so write such numbers in words. Use a decimal comma and dates such as 24. veebruar.

Choose between sina and teie before you start. Apps and youth brands often say sina to sound friendly, while banks, public services and older audiences expect teie. Estonian has coined many words of its own, such as arvuti for computer, but tech talk still mixes in English. Preview brand names and foreign place names, and fix a stubborn one in the pronunciation dictionary.

They are close relatives, but a Finnish voice cannot read Estonian well. Spelling differs, so Estonian writes jõgi where Finnish writes joki. Some look-alikes are false friends: hallitus is the government in Finnish but mould in Estonian. Write in Estonian and use an Estonian voice.

Yes. Russian is the home language of a large minority, and many public services publish in both. Write the Russian version as its own script rather than translating line by line, then use a Russian voice from the Russian page linked on this page.
